About Volunteering

Do you have skills or experience that you could give to a charity? Do you have a favourite hobby or a passion that you would like to share with others?

There are countless ways in which to volunteer – chances are if you have a skill or a hobby, there is a way to share your passion with others through volunteering. There are also lots of activities and types of opportunities available from coaching a sports team, to campaigning for a health charity or devoting your time to helping support local youth work.

You may have specific specialist skills that would be invaluable to a charity, this could be anything from financial, musical or IT skills or being a good listener. Think about the skills you have and how these could be best utilised when considering the type of activity, you would like to volunteer for. Is there a particular group you want to support? Older people or young people or an environmental project?

As a volunteer you could:

  • Provide administrative support
  • Befriend an older person
  • Provide First aid at events
  • Coach a local football team
  • Volunteer for a driving service
  • Help with gardening projects and much more
  • Volunteer in a museum
  • Be a forest / wildlife conservation volunteer
  • Offer a specialist skill

Would you be better suited to a regular volunteering role or would a micro-volunteering or ad-hoc role suit your lifestyle better? Be realistic about how much time you have to devote to volunteering and over what period of time.

  • Volunteering can help people to build confidence and gain new skills and experiences, whilst doing something rewarding at the same time. It can provide you with the opportunity to make new friends, meet new people, find new challenges, but most importantly it can be something you enjoy!
  •  Volunteering can sometimes open doors to further training and paid employment and can be a really good thing to have on your CV. Last year there was almost 1 million people employed in the Voluntary Sector.
  • Vocational experience, learn new skills, meet new people, keep busy, or to make a difference in your community.
